Mathematics

At our school, mathematics plays a vital role in developing pupils’ confidence, resilience and independence.  We aim to create a sense of curiosity, appreciation and enjoyment of the subject, ensuring that all pupils experience success and progress.

In Key Stage 2, there is a strong emphasis on developing secure number skills. These core foundations are essential and are carefully nurtured and revisited throughout the school, enabling pupils to build fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills progressively up to Year 11.

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme to provide a coherent, carefully sequenced curriculum. This structured approach supports our pupils in making meaningful connections and deepening their mathematical knowledge over time.

We understand the importance of adapting teaching to meet diverse learning needs. We employ a variety of methods to accommodate different learning styles and to support engagement, including:

  • Concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches

  • Practical manipulatives such as Numicon and Cuisenaire rods to secure conceptual understanding

  • Whole-class instruction, small group teaching and targeted interventions

  • Visual models and structured mathematical talk

  • Real-life and functional mathematics activities

The use of concrete resources is particularly important in helping pupils develop confidence and secure understanding before moving to more abstract concepts. This approach reduces maths anxiety and promotes independence.

From Year 9 onwards, pupils work towards an Entry Level Mathematics qualification, with ambition and appropriate support to progress to GCSE Mathematics at the end of Year 11. We are committed to ensuring every pupil leaves with a recognised qualification that reflects their achievement and supports their next steps.

Ultimately, our goal is to equip pupils with the mathematical understanding, confidence and problem-solving skills they need for everyday life, further education and employment, while fostering resilience, perseverance and pride in their progress.
