Geography

Vision

At Chaigeley School, we aim to develop students’ understanding of the world around them by exploring places, environments and the relationships between people and the planet. Through structured and engaging learning, students develop curiosity about global issues and an awareness of the wider world.

Intent

Our Geography curriculum aims to inspire curiosity and appreciation for the world. Through the study of places, people and both human and physical environments, students develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand how the world works.

Students are encouraged to think like geographers by asking questions, exploring different viewpoints and communicating their ideas. Alongside subject knowledge, we develop key learning behaviours such as resilience, independence and confidence.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and support sustained progress, enabling students to apply their skills across a range of geographical contexts.

Implementation

Geography is delivered through a consistent and structured approach using the Chaigeley 5-part lesson cycle.

Lessons begin with a Learning Recap to revisit prior knowledge and strengthen memory. This is followed by Tune In, where learning objectives and key vocabulary are introduced to engage students and prepare them for learning.

During Learn It, new knowledge is taught through clear explanation, modelling and guided practice, with learning broken into manageable steps. Students then move to Time to Shine, where they apply their knowledge through independent or supported tasks such as map work, enquiry and discussion.

Lessons conclude with Lock It In, where learning is reviewed and consolidated through questioning and reflection to secure understanding.

The curriculum is adapted to meet the needs of all learners and includes relevant topics that explore both current and historical geographical issues. Opportunities for fieldwork and learning beyond the classroom help students connect their learning to the real world.

Impact

Students develop secure geographical knowledge and an understanding of key concepts including place, environment and human and physical processes. They are able to use subject vocabulary and apply their learning to a range of contexts.

Progress is monitored through questioning, retrieval activities, written work and teacher observation, ensuring both knowledge and skills are developed over time.

Students show increasing confidence, independence and engagement in lessons. They are able to discuss ideas, complete enquiries and demonstrate a growing awareness of the world around them, supporting their preparation for future learning and life beyond school.
