Physical Education

As a trauma informed school Chaigeley recognises the importance PE can play in the development of SEMH pupils and how a simple game can have a huge impact on the development/re-establishment of neural pathways for its pupils. Using research linked to how best to implement a PE programme for such a wide ranging and complex set of individuals; PE at Chaigeley School will be structured around the development of the core skills used in PE. These will be tracked and assessed through the Key Stages of the school but will reflect each individual pupil’s pathway and how they can develop these skills as an individual.

The core skills that the programme will be based on are the following:

Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance
The ability of the body to gather, process, and deliver oxygen to working muscles.
Stamina
The ability of body to process, deliver, store, and use the energy it has to compete in sport.
Strength
The ability of a muscle or  group of muscles to apply force or complete an activity.
Flexibility
The ability to maximise the range of motion at a given joint.
Power
The ability of a muscle or  group of muscles  units to apply maximum force in minimum time.
Speed
The ability to minimise the time of a repeated movement.
Coordination
The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
Agility
The ability to minimise transition time from one movement pattern to another.
Balance
The ability to control the placement of the body’s centre of gravity in relation to its support base.
Accuracy
The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.
