History

At Chaigeley, we believe it is important to encourage thinking about how the past influences the present and to ignite learners’ curiosity about the past. We wish to foster a sense of identity and increase students’ understanding of their own position in the community and in the world.

Help learners develop historical knowledge and understanding; introduce learners to historical inquiry through studying historical evidence asking questions and problem solving; learners develop a sense of chronology; help learners interpret history using a variety of sources; give understanding that the society in which learners lives have been shaped by past developments; develop an appreciation of the need for both continuity and change; develop the ability to communicate historical knowledge in oral, written and visual forms using appropriate vocabulary and techniques.

KS2

In Key Stage 2 we aim to inspire learners’ curiosity and fascination of the world around them and how it has changed over time. We believe that History confirms and extends the knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live. Our aim is to develop the thinking and enquiry skills of learners and the ability to recognise the effects of people, places and events on themselves, their surroundings and the wider world.
We offer a multi-sensory approach to the History curriculum to encourage all learners to reach their academic potential and develop knowledge, skills and understanding that will support them both across the curriculum and for lifelong learning.
Relevant topic boxes are used, containing artefacts and multisensory objects to support learning. The school grounds have a wealth of opportunities for learners to promote learning outside the classroom.

KS3

At Chaigeley, History is taught to all Key Stage 3 learners. A variety of teaching methods are employed, including art, the use of periods of quiet reflection,
exploring artefacts, pictures and photographs, visiting relevant places and meeting and talking with other professionals. The use of case studies and
visual presentations is also important to support learners’ learning. History is an on-going process due to developing resources, the needs of the learners
and the speed of progression, both of the topic and of the learners. Throughout Key Stage 3, pupils will extend and deepen their chronologically secure knowledge and their understanding of British, local and world history.
